snippet: Participants in Alaska commercial fisheries are required to report the statistical area where their harvest occurs. In combination with reports on the harvest species, poundage and etc., these data are useful to analyze and visualize spatial patterns in harvest. This data set defines the current valid statistical areas that may be used on ADF&G fish tickets for salmon, shellfish, and miscellaneous shellfish fisheries. This data set should NOT be used for navigation or for determining compliance with ADF&G Commercial Fishing Regulations. Please consult the ADF&G Salmon Commercial Fisheries Regulations for the official definitions of regulatory boundaries. The statistical areas represented were delineated based on the internal document "Region 1 Salmon, Shellfish, and Miscellaneous Shellfish Statistical Areas" authored by Region 1 CF salmon managers finalized in 2024. NOTE: These data attempt to depict boundaries as used for management during a specific time period. Boundaries used for management may be altered by emergency order and differ from those described in regulations, reports, maps, and other aids. Be sure to reference the most recent Commercial Fishery Advisory Announcements for waters open to commercial fishing. Coordinate locations are in a geographic coordinate system and WGS84 datum. Its advised to check the datum of your GPS prior to entering coordinates for the most accurate locations.

description:

Over the past several years, the department has undergone an extensive effort to correct and provide for accurate descriptions of commercial salmon fishing districts, sections, statistical areas, and closed waters. District and section layers are delineated based on Alaska Fish and Game Regulations as described in 5 AAC 33.200. Statistical areas are not defined in regulation, but internally defined within ADF&G. Statistical areas included are used for salmon, shellfish, and miscellaneous shellfish fisheries for reporting harvest within Southeast Alaska.

Statistical areas are polygons that divide the waters of the State of Alaska and the adjacent Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) into small units for the purpose of reporting and analyzing fishery harvest. Each statistical area is identified by a unique 5-digit number. Salmon statistical areas can be divided by lines defined in ADF&G regulations, and further subdivided based on prominent landmarks or points of land. The statistical areas represented were delineated based on Southeast Alaska salmon manager descriptions as detailed in the internal document "Region 1 Salmon, Shellfish, and Miscellaneous Shellfish Statistical Areas" finalized in 2024. King and Tanner crab outside waters statistical areas use offshore groundfish statistical areas.

Each statistical area has a geometry start date attribute which ranges in this dataset for Southeast Alaska from 1963 to 2023.
