<idAbs>

Over the past several years, the department has undergone an extensive effort to correct and provide for accurate descriptions of commercial salmon fishing districts, sections, statistical areas, and closed waters. District and section layers are delineated based on Alaska Fish and Game Regulations as described in 5 AAC 33.200. Statistical areas are not defined in regulation, but internally defined within ADF&G. Statistical areas included are used for salmon, shellfish, and miscellaneous shellfish fisheries for reporting harvest within Southeast Alaska.

Statistical areas are polygons that divide the waters of the State of Alaska and the adjacent Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) into small units for the purpose of reporting and analyzing fishery harvest. Each statistical area is identified by a unique 5-digit number. Salmon statistical areas can be divided by lines defined in ADF&G regulations, and further subdivided based on prominent landmarks or points of land. The statistical areas represented were delineated based on Southeast Alaska salmon manager descriptions as detailed in the internal document "Region 1 Salmon, Shellfish, and Miscellaneous Shellfish Statistical Areas" finalized in 2024. King and Tanner crab outside waters statistical areas use offshore groundfish statistical areas.

Each statistical area has a geometry start date attribute which ranges in this dataset for Southeast Alaska from 1963 to 2023. Over the years, there have been changes to statistical area shapes , codes, and names. If a statistical area is not included in this file, it may have been used historically and exist in another GIS file version. Please note spring troll statistical areas DO NOT use these statistical areas for recording harvest, but are separately defined each spring in an ADF&G Advisory Announcement. Please contact the Troll Fishery Biologists for additional info on spring troll statistical areas.

All statistical area lines were originally referenced to the WGS84 datum in this feature class.

This data set should NOT be used for navigation or for determining compliance with ADF&G Commercial Fishing Regulations. Please consult the ADF&G Salmon Commercial Fisheries Regulations for the official definitions of regulatory boundaries. NOTE: These data attempt to depict boundaries as used for management during a specific time period. In some cases, boundaries used in practice may differ from those described in regulations, reports, maps, and other aids. If you need to compare to current statistical areas, you will need to refer to other versions of the salmon statistical areas and/or published charts.

Data last updated December 2023

</idAbs>
<idPurp>Participants in Alaska commercial fisheries are required to report the statistical area where their harvest occurs. In combination with reports on the harvest species, poundage and etc., these data are useful to analyze and visualize spatial patterns in harvest.
This data set defines the current valid statistical areas that may be used on ADF&G fish tickets for salmon, shellfish, and miscellaneous shellfish fisheries. This data set should NOT be used for navigation or for determining compliance with ADF&G Commercial Fishing Regulations. Please consult the ADF&G Salmon Commercial Fisheries Regulations for the official definitions of regulatory boundaries. The statistical areas represented were delineated based on the internal document "Region 1 Salmon, Shellfish, and Miscellaneous Shellfish Statistical Areas" authored by Region 1 CF salmon managers finalized in 2024.
NOTE: These data attempt to depict boundaries as used for management during a specific time period. Boundaries used for management may be altered by emergency order and differ from those described in regulations, reports, maps, and other aids. Be sure to reference the most recent Commercial Fishery Advisory Announcements for waters open to commercial fishing.
Coordinate locations are in a geographic coordinate system and WGS84 datum. Its advised to check the datum of your GPS prior to entering coordinates for the most accurate locations. </idPurp>

<statement>Commercial Fisheries Statistical Area boundaries were delineated based on Region 1 Salmon, Shellfish, and Miscellaneous Shellfish Statistical Areas descriptions. This is the first comprehensive document for all Southeast Alaska authored by area managers in (Haines, Juneau, Sitka, Petersburg/Wrangell, and Ketchikan). Bounding coordinates were provided in Degrees Decimal Minutes (DDM) format and WGS84 datum. The named document was compiled and reviewed by the Commercial Fisheries Regional Management Coordinator. This dataset and report does not included Yakutat area statistical areas at this time.
Statistical Area boundaries were aligned with salmon district and section boundaries in most cases. Southeastern Alaska Area Commercial Salmon Fishing Districts and Sections descriptions were obtained from 5 AAC 33.200.</statement>

<srcDesc>U.S. Maritime Limits & Boundaries for the territorial sea (12 nautical miles) and exclusive economic zone (200 nautical miles) map services
(Version 4.1, 9/13/2013) Maritime limits for the United States are measured from the U.S. baseline, which is recognized as the low-water line along the coast as marked on the official U.S. nautical charts in accordance with the articles of the Law of the Sea. The baseline and related maritime limits are reviewed and approved by the interagency U.S. Baseline Committee. The primary purpose of this dataset is to update the official depiction of these maritime limits and boundaries on NOAA's nautical charts. The Office of Coast Survey depicts on its nautical charts the territorial sea (12 nautical miles), contiguous zone (24nm), and exclusive economic zone (200nm, plus maritime boundaries with adjacent/opposite countries). U.S. maritime limits are ambulatory and are subject to revision based on accretion or erosion of the charted low water line. For more information about U.S. Maritime Limits/Boundaries, and to download data, see: http://www.nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/csdl/mbound.htm For the full FGDC metadata record, see: http://www.ncddc.noaa.gov/approved_recs/nos_de/ocs/ocs/ocs/MB_ParentDataset.html

<stepDesc>NHD coastline line features were converted to polygons for land features. All GIS data was projected to GCS_1984. Water polygons created from erasing the land features form the basis for the district polygons.
These district polygons were the base layer for statistical area polygons created in this dataset.</stepDesc>

<stepDesc>ArcGIS Pro Geoprocessing tool - Simplify Shared Edges was used on the districts, sections, statistical areas, and closed waters to net fisheries polygons with all layers used as input features. A Simplification algorithm of 'Retain critical points (Douglas-Peucker) with a simplification tolerance of 5 meters. Input Barrier Layers included the following: 'NOAA_OFFICIAL_wSHIFTS_3nm_WGS1984", district, section, statistical area, and closed waters to net fisheries lines.

<stepRat>This tool was run to reduce the number of vertices in the polygon layers with the goal of improving drawing of the map/feature layers within the ArcGIS Online (AGOL) web maps/apps. This tool was suggested by Esri staff product engineers to maintain topological relationships while reducing vertices but maintaining coincident features.</stepRat>
