Statistical areas are polygons that divide the waters of the State of Alaska and the adjacent Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) into small units for the purpose of reporting and analyzing fishery harvest. Each statistical area is identified by a unique 5-digit number. Salmon statistical areas can be divided by lines defined in ADF&G regulations, and further subdivided based on prominent landmarks or points of land. All regulatory lines were originally referenced to the NAD83 datum and later projected to the WGS84 datum in this feature class. Participants in Alaska commercial fisheries are required to report the statistical area where their harvest occurs. In combination with reports on the harvest species, poundage and etc., these data are useful to analyze and visualize spatial patterns in harvest. This data set defines the current valid statistical areas that may be used on ADF&G fish tickets for salmon and miscellaneous finfish. This data set should NOT be used for navigation or for determining compliance with ADF&G Commercial Fishing Regulations. Please consult the ADF&G Commercial Fisheries Regulations for the official definitions of regulatory boundaries.
NOTE: These data attempt to depict statistical area boundaries as used for management during a specific time period. In some cases, statistical area boundaries used in practice may differ from those described in regulations, reports, maps, and other aids.

Topology Rules applied: Must Not Overlap, although exceptions were applied due to existence of overlapping polygons particularly in the offshore waters adjacent to the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers.
The topology rule must not have gaps was not evaluated because of the large number of topological errors associated with Islands being 'gaps' in polygons. Map Topology within ArcGIS Pro was also used when editing adjacent polygons.
Successful evaluation requires that no topology errors remain.

Polygon Accuracy
The Polygon Accuracy measure is intended to ensure that statistical area polygons are accurate.
Regulatory coordinates (e.g., Registration Areas, Districts, Subdistricts) were recorded from the appropriate Alaska Fish and Game Laws and Regulations, and plotted over the appropriate salmon statistical area feature class. Statistical area boundaries that follow regulatory boundaries were aligned to regulatory coordinates. All polygons were examined for accuracy by regional staff (Regional Supervisors, Fishery Coordinators, Biologists, and Regional GIS Representatives). The source data for the coastline was the 2018 Mean High Water (MHW) coastline data from the National Ocean and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) that is in the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). The NHD is available for download here: https://www.usgs.gov/core-science-systems/ngp/national-hydrography/national-hydrography-dataset?qt-science_support_page_related_con=0#qt-science_support_page_related_con
For Mean Low Low Water coastline the Office of Coast Survey Seamless Raster Nautical Chart Services was used to digitize the MLLW line for certain boundaries. The map service can be accessed here: https://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/data/gis-data-and-services.html#seamless-raster-nautical-chart-services
Boundary lines were created based on documentation from Area Offices and existing PVS_Statewide_2007 (originally named "SALMON_32606"). The lines were then used to 'split" the water polygons by feature.
This created a seamless workflow in creating statistical polygons that can be easily modified.
